Softball Takes Series vs. UTEP

DENTON, Texas – UNT softball won its fourth consecutive league series Saturday afternoon, defeating UTEP 4-2 at Lovelace Stadium. The Mean Green never trailed and held the Miners to two runs on four hits.
QUOTING HEAD COACH RODNEY DELONG
"We're doing what it takes. Really if we want to position ourselves correctly, we have to sweep some of these series. Hopefully we'll come ready to play tomorrow. That's really our goal is to sweep."
RECAP:
In the bottom of the first inning, UNT (20-7, 9-2) jumped ahead on a two-out RBI single to left field by Kailey Gamble to grab a 1-0 lead.
UTEP (12-22, 2-9) responded in the top of the second with an RBI single to second base to even the game at 1-1.
Both teams settled in on defense after that, keeping the game scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Lexi Cobb recaptured the lead for the Mean Green. Cobb knocked in a run on a two-out RBI double to center field to make it 2-1. Cierra Simon followed up with another RBI double to right center to stretch the lead to 3-1.
Molly Rainey scored the last run for the Mean Green in the bottom of the sixth with her fourth homer of the season, to make it 4-1.
The Miners scored one run in the top of the seventh inning, but the UNT defense shut the door on any potential rally with two quick outs to end the game.
Ashley Peters (11-3) recorded the win as she pitched 6.1 innings and struck out a career-high nine batters. Peters was relieved in the seventh inning by Skylar Savage. Savage recorded the final two outs to record her third save of the season.
Aalijah Alarcon (7-11) was charged the loss and pitched a complete game.
Rainey went 2-for-3 at the plate and added one run, one RBI, and her fourth home run of the season. Simon finished 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI, and one double for consecutive games with multi-hits.
Anna Sample led the Miners on offense going 2-for-3 with one walk and one run.
UP NEXT
UNT will go for the sweep Sunday at Noon CT at Lovelace Stadium and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
