
Softball Clinches Series Against Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kansas – UNT defeated Kansas 12-4 and 9-5 in a double-header on Friday at Arrocha Ballpark. The Mean Green defeated a Big 12 opponent for the second time this season after winning two out of three against Texas Tech earlier in the season and defeated Kansas for the first time since 2009.

GAME 1- UNT 12, KU 4 (six innings)
North Texas (26-11) got on the board in the third inning when Kailey Gamble knocked in the first run of the game on an RBI single to center field to make it a 1-0 North Texas advantage.
The Jayhawks (14-26) responded in the bottom of the third inning with three runs after two errors by North Texas that extended the inning.
The Mean Green kept fighting and with two outs, Cierra Simon drove in a run with an RBI single to center field to cut the deficit to one and make it 3-2. Kalei Christensen then immediately followed with another RBI single to even the game at 3-3.
Kansas added a run on an RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead 4-3.
But the bats stayed hot in the sixth inning for North Texas as Lexi Cobb led off with a double to center field before Simon homered to left field to make it 5-4. Four batters later Molly Rainey brought home two more runs with an RBI single to center field to widen the lead to 7-4. Emma Grahmann then entered the game pinch hit and singled to right field to plate Rainey and increase the lead to 8-4. Cobb then came to the plate for her second at-bat of the inning and doubled to center field to increase the lead to 10-4. Christensen brought in the last two runs of the inning with a double to right center to go up 12-4.
Ashley Peters pitched 4.1 innings before Skylar Savage came into the game in the fifth inning. Savage (11-5) recorded the win after pitching 1.2 scoreless innings.
Christensen led the Mean Green at the plate going 3-for-4 with two runs, one walk, and three RBI.
Savanna DesRochers (1-3) was charged the loss and pitched 4.1 innings while striking out six batters.
DesRochers led the Jayhawks on offense and finished 2-for-3 with one run in the game.
GAME 2- UNT 9, KU 5
Cobb started the game off quickly with a leadoff solo home run to center to grab a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
The Jayhawks (14-28) then responded as their first five batters of the game reached base. Kansas scored four runs to make it 4-1 in the bottom of the first inning before the Mean Green were able to end the inning.
The Mean Green (27-11) then tied the game in the top of the second inning with three runs. With the bases loaded and two outs Simon reached base on a walk, bringing Ashlyn Walker home for the first run. Christensen then followed with single to left field to deliver two more runs and even the game at 4-4.
Both teams settled in as neither team scored until the fourth inning. North Texas broke the drought as Simon plated another run on a foul out to make it 5-4.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Kansas scored on an RBI single up the middle to even the game again at 5-5.
Saleen Donohoe then proceeded to hit a grand slam in the top of the seventh to take a 9-5 lead.
Donohoe started the game in the circle before Savage came into the game in the first inning. Savage pitched 5.1 innings and struck out three Jayhawks before Peters entered the game in the sixth inning. Peters (14-5) picked up the win as she pitched the last 1.2 innings to clinch the series for North Texas.
Christensen led the Mean Green once again in game two going 2-for-3 with one run, one walk, and two RBI. Donohoe finished the game 2-for-4 with one run, four RBI, and the game-winning grand slam.
DesRochers (L, 1-4) came into the game in the third inning and finished with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
Shayna Espy finished 2-for-3 with one run and one walk to lead the Jayhawks on offense.
