
Softball Clinches Conference Series vs. UAB

BIRMINGHAM, AL – North Texas softball played its second double-header of the season and rallied late in both games to win the series against UAB at Mary Bowers Field. The Mean Green scored three runs in the final two innings of game one to win the first game and scored three runs in the top of the seventh in game two to clinch the series.

GAME 1- UNT 3, UAB 2
The game started in a defensive clash as neither team scored in the first three innings.
UAB (21-22) struck first as they scored on an error to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
UAB was held hitless through four innings until it added another run in the bottom of the fifth on a groundout to make it 2-0.
North Texas (29-12) then responded in the top of the sixth, starting with Tayla Evans at the plate. Evans hit a sac fly to bring Rylan Dooner home and cut the deficit to 2-1. The ensuing batter, Mikayla Smith, then evened the game at 2-2 with an RBI single to center field to plate Molly Rainey.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Mean Green took the lead on another RBI single, this time by Kailey Gamble. The single gave UNT a 3-2 lead and proved to be the game-winner.
Ashley Peters pitched 5.0 innings and only surrendered two hits and one earned run on the game. Skylar Savage (12-6) entered the game in the sixth inning and pitched 2.0 hitless innings as she picked up the win.
Molly Rainey led North Texas on offense, finishing 2-for-3 with one run.
Bailey Tindell (2-6) was charged the loss for the Blazers and pitched 1.1 innings. Lindsey Smith finished 1-for-3 and scored one of the two runs for UAB.
GAME 2- UNT 5, UAB 4
In the second game of the day, the Blazers struck first as they scored three runs on three hits and two errors in the bottom of the first. UAB grabbed a 3-0 lead before the Mean Green retired the seventh batter for the final out of the inning.
The Blazers (21-23) came back the next inning and added to its lead when they scored another run on a groundout to make it 4-0.
The Mean Green got on the board in the fourth inning when Kailey Gamble led off with a solo homer to left center making it 4-1.
Two innings later, Saleen Donohoe hit another lead-off homer for the Mean Green to make it 4-2 in the top of the sixth.
North Texas (30-12) trailed by two runs heading into the top of the seventh with only three outs remaining. With the bases loaded and only one out, Gamble hit an RBI double to right field to drive three runs in and give UNT its first lead of the game.
The hit tied Gamble with Maddelyn Fraley for the second-most RBI in a season in program history with 47. Only Susan Waters has recorded more in a single season with 53 RBI in the 2006 season.
Skylar Savage pitched 5.0 innings to start the game and struck out three Blazer batters before Peters (16-5) came into the game in the sixth inning. Peters picked up the win and held UAB to one hit in 2.0 innings pitched.
Gamble led North Texas with four RBI and finished 2-for-4 at the plate. She recorded the hit in both games that gave the Mean Green the lead.
Sarah Cespedes (9-7) was charged the loss and pitched 1.0 innings for the Blazers. Tyler Armistead finished 2-for-4 with one RBI to lead the Blazers at the plate.
