Marzilio Prepped For NCAA Regional

DENTON - Sophomore men's golfer Vicente Marzilio is no stranger to high profile events.
The Argentina native qualified for the NCAA Regional as an individual last year as a freshman after winning the individual Conference USA championship, and this winter played in the Latin America Amateur Championship and narrowly missed a victory that came with an exemption to the Masters and The Open Championship.
Now, after a stellar spring season that featured two top-10 finishes, Marzilio is set to compete in the Norman NCAA Regional at Jimmie Austin Golf Club, which begins Monday and runs through Wednesday, as the second-seeded individual with a shot at qualifying for the NCAA Championship May 27-June 1 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
"I feel great about my season," Marzilio said. "It was very consistent, and I played really good golf week after week. There was a really good chance to win my second college event, although it didn't go my way, but I'm happy I put myself in that position again. It's all about being consistently in position.
"The LAAC definitely helped me to continue to grow mentally. It set a higher bar and challenged me and helped me be excited about the season."
Marzilio was No. 119 in the latest Golfstat poll and has led the team all year, posting a 72.88 scoring average on the year with a season-low round of 66 at the Louisiana Classics.
Last year at the Stillwater Regional, he finished tied for 21st, and learned what it takes to be successful at the regional.
"I learned that it's an all-or-nothing kind of tournament," Marzilio said. "You have nothing to lose really and getting to nationals is a big deal. I'll just try to play my best golf this week, not worry about anything and enjoy the opportunity again. If it falls my way, we keep on going. If not, it'll be closing a great spring."
UNT head coach Brad Stracke said the weather forecast in Norman should play right into Marzilio's hands. He's set to tee off on Monday at 10:33 a.m. Fans can follow the tournament live on Golfstat.
"The NCAA tournament at Jimmie Austin will be another windy event, which is nothing new for Vicente this spring," Stracke said. "Vicente is a very strong player and seems to enjoy windy conditions. I'm excited to watch him perform this week."
