UNT gets double figures from Noble and Johnson
DENTON, Texas (Jan. 7, 2023) – Both Quincy Noble and Aniyah Johnson scored in double figures for the second straight game, but Middle Tennessee shot 46.9 percent from the floor and knocked down 10 3-pointers to topple North Texas 76-57 Saturday inside the Super Pit.
Noble finished the contest with 14 points while Johnson added 10 as UNT fell to 4-10 overall and 1-3 in C-USA play. The Lady Raiders, meanwhile, improve to 12-2 and remain unbeaten in conference competition at 5-0.
The Mean Green also got double-digit points from Tommisha Lampkin who came off the bench and scored 11 points while pulling down five rebounds in just 15 minutes of game action.
Sophomore Kendall McGruder was solid delivering the basketball as she set a new high watermark for assists by a UNT player this season and the most since Brittany Smith on Feb. 8, 2018 with nine.
The Lady Raiders jumped ahead quickly in the contest, starting the game on a 9-0 run in less than two minutes of game action.
UNT was able to fight back, cutting the deficit down to four after Noble knocked down a 3-pointer, but MTSU swelled the lead to double figures by scoring the final seven points of the first to make the score 23-12 through one.
With the score 27-18 in the second, freshman Ereauna Hardaway scored five straight points to make the score 27-23. Much as they did the entire contest, however, the Lady Raiders immediately answered with a 10-0 run and took a 37-25 lead into the locker room.
Coming out of the break, the Lady Raiders scored 12 of the first 14 points of the third quarter to grow the lead from 10 to 22. In total, MTSU outscored UNT 22-4 to close the second quarter and open the third.
From that point on, the Lady Raiders kept the Mean Green at arms-length as the lead never shrunk to less than 19.
UNT dished out 19 assists as a team, the most since having 20 against Howard on Nov. 11, 2020.
Quoting Coach Mitchell
"I'm disappointed, obviously in the loss, but more importantly in our response to when things didn't go our way. I thought we had some opportunities to finish at the rim and get stops. When they would make a big shot or when we would miss something easy, I thought we responded with less energy and Middle did not. I thought the energy level between the teams was significant. They continued to compete at a high level, and we did not."
