HOUSTON — The nation's No. 1 men's basketball scoring defense, North Texas, heads to Rice Saturday for a rematch against the Owls at 7 p.m. CT.
Saturday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield on the Varsity Network App.
UNT (18-5, 9-3) heads into the game against Rice (15-7, 6-5) winners of 13 of its last 16 games. The Mean Green feature the nation's top scoring defense, holding its 23 opponents this year to just 54.7 points per game. Last year, North Texas featured the nation's No. 1 scoring defense as they held their opponents to a Conference USA record 55.7 points per game.
Rice has a dynamic offense that averages nearly 80 points per contest, which is the second-best in the league. Big man Max Fiedler leads C-USA in rebounding (8.36/ game), assists (5.23/game) and field goal percentage (.729). He's the only everyday player in the league shooting over 50 percent from the floor.
UNT, though, owns the nation's best road record over the last two seasons. Their .833 road winning percentage since the beginning of last season ranks first in the nation. The Mean Green enter Saturday's game having won two straight at the Owls' Tudor Fieldhouse, including a 23-point win last year.
After Saturday's game, UNT returns home to host the UAB Blazers on Thursday Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. CT. The Mean Green beat UAB in Birmingham, Alabama, 63-52, on Jan. 21. The Blazers defeated No. 19 Florida Atlantic on Thursday, 86-77, ending FAU's 20-game winning streak.
