RUSTON, La. – McKenzie Wagoner recorded 13 strikeouts in a complete-game win as UNT softball defeated Louisiana Tech 3-1 in its opening game of the Conference USA schedule on Friday.
North Texas (13-8, 1-0) outlasted LA Tech (14-7, 0-1) in an 11-inning victory for its first extra-inning win of the season.
"I knew my team was behind me the whole time and I knew the offense was going to kick it in gear at the right time," Wagoner said. "I just believed in us, and I was confident that we could pull it out. My adrenaline is still pumping, and I'm excited for another two days against LA Tech."
Wagoner (5-1) tallied career-highs with 11.0 innings and 13 strikeouts while allowing four hits and one run on 169 pitches. Her 13 strikeouts were the most by a UNT pitcher since Hope Trautwein recorded 16 at LA Tech on May 7, 2021.
The Mean Green struck first after Jodie Epperson tagged her seventh double of the season down the left field line and a walk by Lexi Cobb. Rylee Nicholson squared around for a bunt that was thrown away to score Epperson.
Wagoner recorded strikeouts on six of the initial eight outs for UNT and held the Lady Techsters scoreless through five innings.
Cobb singled down the line in left to open the sixth inning but was not able to come home to score for North Texas to hold a 1-0 lead. LA Tech scored a run in the home half of the inning to tie the game at 1-1.
Wagoner posted three more strikeouts and held the Lady Techsters scoreless into the 11th inning. With 12 strikeouts, she moved past her previous personal-best mark of 10 strikeouts from the season-opening win over UIC on Feb. 10.
Cierra Simon led off the 11th inning with a bunt single to flip the card for the Mean Green. A sacrifice bunt and error gave UNT runners on second and third with one out. Rylee Nicholson provided the breakthrough with a sacrifice fly to plate Simon.
Kailey Gamble added an insurance run with a lined RBI single into center field for a 3-1 North Texas lead.
Wagoner took the ball in the bottom of the 11th to retire the side in order while adding her final strikeout of the night for the win.
