BOCA RATON, Fla. – Cierra Simon boosted UNT softball to a 2-1 win over Florida Atlantic in eight innings on Friday night at Joan Joyce Field. The sophomore shortstop hit a solo home run in the eighth and recorded the final out with a game-winning catch on a line drive to the left side.
"Tonight's win meant everything for us," Simon said. "We've had our struggles this season but last week we talked about not waiting until the conference tournament to play with urgency. We came into today's game with the mindset that we can't be beat, and we will do whatever it takes to win."
North Texas (27-20, 12-7) collected its second extra-inning win of the season, both coming against Conference USA opponents. The Mean Green hit two home runs against the Owls (30-16, 12-7) after Mikayla Smith connected for her ninth of the season in the second inning.
Ashley Peters (W, 11-8) tallied her ninth complete game of the year and set a new career-high with eight innings pitched. She allowed one run on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts. In the first inning, Peters gathered her 250th career strikeout at UNT. She is currently sixth all-time and needs 16 to move into the top five in Mean Green history.
"Today's win helped me regain my confidence because I was struggling these past few weeks," Simon added. "I had to tell myself that I'm better than who I was the day before and my mistakes don't define me. I played my heart out for my team and didn't think about myself. Today's game was amazing, and it was a huge breakthrough for the team and I."
