Tennis Opens Fall Campaign with Solid Showing in Diving Eagle Invite

Mean Green finish the weekend 17-11 in singles play, 24-16 overall
DENTON, Texas – In the opening weekend of individual action on the courts, the UNT women's tennis team produced a strong showing in the Diving Eagle Invite at the Waranch Tennis Complex in their inaugural performance under first-year head coach Amanda Stone.
The Mean Green finished the weekend with a 17-11 overall record in singles play, led by impressive 3-1 marks from Olivia Malm, Stanislava Shulzhenko and Carolina Laydner.
In total, UNT finished 24-16 across all matches after posting a 7-5 record in doubles competition. The seven individual players and the three all-UNT doubles who competed all picked up multiple wins on the weekend and none finished with more losses than victories.
Starting on Friday, the Mean Green got a strong showing in doubles play from the combination of Olivia Malm and Lilly Schultz who teamed up to win a pair of matches 8-1 and 8-3. In addition, the teams of Lou Chalard and Laydner and Shulzhenko and Nformi Stadfany both bounced back after early losses to win their second matches 8-5 and 8-3, respectively.
On the singles side in the first day of action, Stadfany, Malm, Shulzhenko, Schultz and Chalard all produced wins in their first individual action of 2023.
On day two, Chalard and Laydner as well as Shulzhenko and Stadfany added wins to their ledger as the all-freshman combo won 8-5 while Shulzhenko and Stadfany produced a dominant 8-0 victory.
Singles play on day two was jam packed with action with 14 total matches on the day for UNT players.
The day was highlighted by Laydner and Marina Adati both picking up a pair of victories in their respective matches. Laydner won her matches 7-6 [8-6], 6-1 and 6-4, 6-0 while Adati grabbed a pair of straight set wins 6-1, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-3.
In addition, Stadfany, Malm, Shulzhenko and Schultz all had one singles win on the day.
The third and final day of competition saw Chalard and Laydner win their third doubles match of the weekend, picking up an 8-6 win to finish the tournament with a 3-1 overall record.
Day three also saw singles victories by Laydner, Chalard, Malm and Shulzhenko, all of which came in straight sets to cap the weekend off with a bang.
The Mean Green return to action on Friday, Sept. 29 through Sunday, Oct. 1 when they compete in the UCA Invite hosted by Central Arkansas in Conway, Ark. The three-day tournament will be the final tune-up for UNT before the ITA Texas Regionals Oct. 12-16.
