DENTON — The UNT soccer team played to scoreless draw Sunday versus nationally ranked No. 16 Memphis at home to secure its 30th straight year without a losing season and earn a spot in the 2024 American Athletic Conference Tournament.
Sunday's 0-0 draw versus the national ranked Tigers comes exactly seven years to the day when the Mean Green drew with No. 18 Rice at home, which was the last time UNT picked up points versus a top 25 league opponent.
"I'm proud of my team tonight, this was a track meet with all the speed on the field between the two teams," said head coach John Hedlund. "I have a lot of respect for Memphis with all their titles in the AAC and being nationally ranked the entire year. Both teams had their chances in front of the goal and I would say both teams as well played great defense so I feel a 0-0 draw is a pretty fair result tonight for both of us."
"It was great to see and meet up with all the former players on Alumni night, players that have built this program to where it is today," he added.
The Mean Green (7-5-5, 3-3-3) defense bottled the 2024 AAC regular season champions, making it hard for them to get clean looks. But the play of the night came from freshman goalkeeper Hick Bishop who in the 79th minute made a fully stretched out save in the top left corner of the net to prevent a go-ahead goal by Memphis' (11-1-3, 6-0-3) Anna Hauer.
Bishop, who earned her first career shutout with the result, was moved into the starting goalkeeper role two matches prior. She made five total saves in Sunday's draw and on top of her late game-saving stop had a clutch kick save in the 48th minute and commanded the box on all five of the Tigers' corners.
UNT's attack was also limited in its opportunities as they had a season low four shots on Sunday but in the 37th minute could have taken a one-goal advantage when senior Rachel Roebuck stepped to the spot on a penalty kick. However, the captain who was 2-2 in her career on penalties was denied by Memphis' keeper Kaylie Bierman to keep the match scoreless
With the draw, UNT sits alone in sixth place of the AAC standings with 12 points and with one match remaining. The Mean Green travel to UAB on Thursday for the season finale. The Blazers are tied for fourth as of Sunday.
