The Mean Green shot 70% from the field in the 98-48 win
DENTON, Texas – The UNT women's basketball team took care of business with a 98-48 win over Midwestern State in its exhibition contest Wednesday night inside The Super Pit.
The American Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year, Tommisha Lampkin, led the way with a game-high 17 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field. Lampkin's efficiency was a small sample of the night for the Mean Green, who converted 70% of their shots from the floor and went 9-of-12 from deep as a team.
"I thought that our first time taking the floor we did a lot of good, but there is a lot we have to clean up," head coach Jason Burton said. "We shot the ball the best we have shot it in a game since I have been here from the floor overall and from 3-point territory.
North Texas had four other players join Lampkin in double figures with Jaaucklyn Moore and Kyla Deck both recording 15 points, Jaelyn Talley adding 14 and Ereauna Hardaway scoring 11.
Moore and Deck combined for seven 3-pointers on the night, and more impressively doing it on eight attempts. Freshmen Gwendlyn McGrew and Chania Price each added a 3-pointer of their own as well.
Three of Moore's four triples on the night came in the first half as she helped spark a 14-3 run in the second quarter to build a comfortable 45-22 lead. UNT locked down Midwestern State defensively late in the quarter holding them scoreless for over five minutes until a layup with 14 seconds remaining made the score 50-26 at the half.
The Mean Green continued the rout in the second half, outscoring Midwestern State 48-20 over the final 20 minutes.
Despite turning the ball over 26 times, North Texas still held an advantage in the category by forcing Midwestern State into 32 miscues that resulted in 33 points for UNT.
"I think you can see how good we can be if we take care of the basketball," Burton said. "I thought Midwestern State was scrappy and we weren't tough enough today. If we clean up our turnovers and toughness, there is a high ceiling with this team."
UNT will return to The Super Pit Monday, Nov. 4 when it hosts Alcorn State in the regular season opener. Monday's festivities will also feature a banner ceremony pregame to recognize last season's AAC regular season championship and WBIT appearance.
