AUSTIN - The UNT divers left Austin with several positives heading into the end of the fall portion of the team's schedule after a strong showing at the Longhorn Diving Invite over the weekend.
The Mean Green scored a third-place showing, a new school record and two NCAA Zone cuts against a strong field comprised of Texas, Texas A&M, TCU, Arizona, Stanford, Utah, Pittsburgh and Miami.
UNT started the weekend off on Friday with a third-place finish from junior Kamryn Wong in the 3-meter springboard with a score of 308.45, and on Saturday, sophomore Sydney Guidara narrowly missed the final in the 1-meter springboard by finishing 14th in the prelim with a score of 256.75 - less than three points shy of making the final.
On Sunday, freshman Amelia Sharp set a new program record and earned an NCAA Zone cut in the platform event with a score of 234.35 to finish 11th, and Guidara also got her platform Zone cut with a 225.75 to finish 12th. That means for the first time in program history, more than one UNT diver will compete in platform at NCAA Zones in Iowa City, Iowa, on March 10-12. Guidara is now qualified for NCAA Zones in all three events, while Sharp earned her first career Zone cut. They'll be joined, so far, by Wong and Mackenzie Ferguson (1-meter).
The divers will return to action Thursday at the SMU Diving Invite, which will run for three days and conclude on Saturday.
"As a team, we did a lot of great things, had some really nice dives and they did a great job of bouncing back from some struggles," associate head coach/diving coach Stephanie O'Callaghan said. "Overall, they all did great today on platform for the little time we've had to train on it so far this year. This was a very competitive meet with a lot of strong talent, and I think our team did a great job overall and also learned a lot from the experience that we will take and use to be better for this next weekend at SMU."
