DALLAS - The UNT divers had a strong showing at the SMU Diving Invite over the weekend to close out the fall schedule with the midseason championships.
The Mean Green were led by junior Kamryn Wong, who won both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events and beat out Mexican Olympian Aranza Vazquez Montano from UNC in both. Wong won the 1-meter with a score of 316.50, and teammate Sydney Guidara got fourth with a 281.60. In the 3-meter springboard, Wong edged out Montano with a 330.70, and freshman Amelia Sharp also got a top-10 spot with a 10th-place finish after her 250.05.
On the platform on Saturday, Guidara finished third with a 218.60, while Wong finished seventh with a new season best (205.30) and Sharp came in ninth (194.15) a week after setting a new program record in the event. Michaella Rhodes got a season best score of 154.90, and Mackenzie Ferguson and Gabi Somoza both had lifetime bests with a 180.75 and 170.35, respectively.
"I'm really proud of the divers," said associate head coach/diving coach Stephanie O'Callaghan. "It's not an easy feat to do two invites back-to-back, and they did a phenomenal job with their effort, energy and competitiveness. There were a lot of strong teams over the last two weeks, including multiple Olympians, and they showed their spirit and made the Mean Green proud. Kamryn won both 1M and 3M springboard and Sydney got third on tower and fourth on 1M this weekend. We had some personal bests and season bests; and it was a great opportunity to compete where conference will be held this year.
"Every chance we get to compete is a great opportunity to learn and get better. We are stronger together and it's been a joy to coach this group that is so tight knit and supportive of one another. I'm looking forward to the next bit of our season that is focused on training so we can fine tune things before we get to the back half of our meets."
UNT will be back in action on Jan. 24-25, as the Mean Green will head to UTRGV in Edinburg, Texas.
