DENTON — The UNT men's basketball team stayed undefeated this season at home with a 68-64 win over reigning Sun Belt Conference champion App State Friday night at the Super Pit.
Brenen Lorient led the way for the Mean Green (8-3) with 17 points, his third consecutive game where he scored 15-plus. Over this three-game stretch, Lorient is shooting 82. percent from the field (19-23). Moulaye Sissoko picked up season highs with seven points and 10 rebounds.
"It was a good college basketball game," head coach Ross Hodge said. "[We were] able to make just enough stops [and] just enough plays."
North Texas went down by eight early before tying the game at 26 with 3:18 remaining in the first half. The Mean Green went on a 7-2 run into the locker room to take a 33-28 lead at the break.
The Mean Green led by as many as 15 in the second half but the Mountaineers (6-6) launched a comeback effort getting within two points with 11 seconds remaining. However, UNT put away the contest with four consecutive made free throws by Jasper Floyd, who scored eight points on the night.
UNT was held to a season low five 3-pointers on Friday but shot 19-of-28 (67.8 percent) from inside the arc.
North Texas closes its three-game home set on Sunday at 2 p.m. versus Houston Christian as the Mean Green look to extend their winning streak. The contest will be held at the Super Pit and broadcast on the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield and streamed on ESPN+.
