The Mean Green had an 11-game home win streak snapped in the loss
DENTON, Texas – The UNT women's basketball team couldn't hold off a late surge from UTSA as it dropped its first home game of the season, 66-63, Sunday inside The Super Pit.
Similar to the first meeting between the teams in San Antonio, it was a tight game for the entire 40 minutes as each team's largest lead was seven points in the first half.
UTSA jumped out to its largest lead of the game early in the first quarter with a 9-0 run courtesy of three Aysia Proctor 3-pointers. The Roadrunners entered Sunday's contest averaging 4.7 3-pointers per game and doubled that with eight against the Mean Green.
UNT would respond and took the lead midway through the second quarter that it held until late in the fourth quarter. Desiree Wooten was a spark off the bench for the Mean Green as she got into double figures in the first half for the second game in-a-row. In addition to her scoring, Wooten had five rebounds in the first half, took a charge and made hustle plays to ignite North Texas.
After taking a 34-30 halftime lead, the third quarter was evenly contested but seven points from Jaaucklyn Moore in the final 1:33 of the quarter gave the Mean Green a 52-46 advantage.
In an eerily similar fashion to the game in San Antonio, the Mean Green went cold for a portion of the fourth quarter, shooting 25% in the final 10 minutes. In that time, UNT's leading scorers DesiRay Kernal and Tommisha Lampkin found their time on the court limited with four fouls a piece.
Meanwhile, UTSA's Jordyn Jenkins showed why she was the 2023 Conference USA Player of the Year, scoring 12 of her 29 points in the quarter. Her third 3-pointer of the game at the 4:37 mark put the Roadrunners up 60-57 and gave them their first lead since the 4:27 mark in the second quarter.
Trailing 66-63, the Mean Green had a chance to tie the game on their final possession but Shamaryah Duncan's 3-point attempt was blocked by Kyra White as time ran out.
Kernal had a bounce back game totaling 16 points and 12 rebounds in her seventh double double of the season despite the foul trouble. Wooten was held scoreless in the second half but still recorded her third consecutive game in double figures and tied a career high with six rebounds.
After struggling mightily with UTSA's physicality in the first meeting, UNT responded Sunday outrebounding the Roadrunners who ranked No. 6 in the country in that category, 44-35. The Mean Green were also able to get to the free throw line, but left points on the court, converting only 16 of their 26 attempts.
UNT will have another chance to earn its 20th victory of the season Wednesday when it hosts Charlotte at 6:30 p.m. CT.

Thoughts on the game:
"I thought we played incredibly well. We followed the game plan and rebounded, which were some of the things we were worried about. We took some charges and got their bigs in some foul trouble. We hadn't shot 26 free throws in I don't know how long and we just didn't make them today. That's the first glaring thing to me of why we lost the game."
