Comeback Falls Short as Softball Drops Series Finale at UAB, 8-6

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Despite a three-run surge in the top of the seventh inning, UNT softball fell 8-6 to UAB on Sunday afternoon at Mary Bowers Field.

The Mean Green (21-17, 10-5) suffered its first American Athletic Conference series sweep of the season and first winless league weekend in league play since March 26, 2023. The Blazers (17-21, 8-7) posted six runs in the bottom of the fourth for the sixth six-plus run inning by an opponent this year.

Elizabeth Moffitt gave North Texas the lead with a three-run home run in the second inning, her second of the season. She finished 1-for-2 with one walk and three RBI to set a new career-high mark.

Starting pitcher McKenzie Wagoner (L, 7-5) was lifted from the game after UAB collected five consecutive singles to open the fourth inning. She completed three innings with one strikeout and allowed five earned runs on six hits and one walk. Skylar Savage spun the final nine outs after she entered with two runners in scoring position and zero outs in the fourth.

Lexi Cobb reached base in three of her four at-bats after she returned to the No. 2 position in the batting order for the first time since Feb. 18. She finished 1-for-4 with one run scored.

With a five-run deficit entering the seventh inning, both Cobb and Morgan Medford reached base to open the frame. Medford would later score on a sacrifice fly by Cierra Simon while Cobb and pinch runner Katy Truitt came home on a two-run triple by Rylee Nicholson. Nicholson's triple was the first of her UNT career and third overall after she collected two in 2022 at South Dakota.

North Texas travels to Texas A&M-Commerce for a midweek doubleheader at John Cain Family Softball Complex on Wednesday. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 5 p.m. with game two following at approximately 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
