Two-time all-conference selection becomes first former UNT player to hold coaching position
DENTON, Texas – Former UNT center fielder and two-time all-conference selection Katie Clark (2018-20) was hired as an assistant coach for the Mean Green softball program, head coach Rodney DeLong announced on Monday.
Clark becomes the first former player in program history to serve as a member of the UNT softball coaching staff.
"I'm excited to bring Katie back to our program," DeLong said. "She was a very good player with a high IQ. She is proud to be here and proud to be a part of our program again."
Clark was named all-conference as a sophomore and junior along with Conference USA Newcomer of the Year honors in 2018 after she began her collegiate career at Stephen F. Austin. Despite being honored as a member of the 2020 Preseason All-CUSA team, her career ended on March 13, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"It's surreal to be back at UNT and an honor to once again be a part of a program that means so much to me," Clark said. "I am grateful to Coach DeLong for the opportunity."
Clark helped the Mean Green capture its first conference championship in 2019 and set a then single-season best mark of 35 wins, including a program high 19 victories in conference play.
As a junior, she set the single-season program record with a .404 batting average which led CUSA and ranked top 50 in the nation. Clark also holds the UNT record for career batting average with a .384 mark along with top 10 placement in on-base percentage (.419), slugging percentage (.551), triples (6) and stolen bases (38).
Prior to her return to North Texas, Clark worked as director of player development with Texas Unity Softball and coached its 14U team.
A native of Katy, Texas, Clark was a three-year letter winner at Katy High School where she led the Tigers to the 2015 6A State Championship.
Clark earned her bachelor's degree from the University of North Texas in May 2020.
