Pielet becomes first UNT player to play in All-American since 2018
DENTON, Texas – The UNT women's tennis team kicks off its fall season this weekend as the Mean Green host the Diving Eagle Invite Friday-Sunday at Waranch Tennis Complex.
In addition, junior Gianna Pielet will be competing in the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, N.C., from Saturday to Wednesday.
Pielet will become the first UNT player to play in the ITA All-American Championships since Maria Kononova was selected in 2018.
The championship consists of the top 128 players in the NCAA. From this, ten singles players (10) will qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship (eight main draw quarterfinalists & two feed-in consolation finalists).
The tournament starts with pre-qualifying on Saturday, Sept. 21 and is whittled down over the course of the week until a champion is crowned.
The Diving Eagle Invite, meanwhile, will be played to open the fall season for the second straight year. North Texas started its 2023-24 campaign with a 17-11 singles mark in Denton in the first tournament under head coach Amanda Stone.
As are all events in the fall, both tournaments will be individual competitions with no team scores.
The Mean Green returned seven of its eight players from the 2023-24 squad that won 12 dual matches, the most of any UNT team led by a first-year head coach since 1985.
