The Mean Green improved to 8-1 in conference play, marking the best start in program history
DENTON, Texas — The UNT women's basketball team took its first lead of the game with 2:13 remaining in the fourth quarter in a 70-67 comeback victory over Temple at the Super Pit Wednesday night.
North Texas (16-5, 8-1 AAC) found itself trailing by its largest deficit of the game at 19 points with 3:06 remaining in the second quarter. The comeback marked the largest deficit the Mean Green have overcome since a 20-point comeback against IUPUI on Dec. 5, 2015.
UNT protected the ball well on the night, breaking an Owls (12-8, 6-3 AAC) streak of 11 consecutive games with 10-plus turnovers forced in the first half. The Mean Green had nine total turnovers on the night.
Temple took a 13-point lead into the half, after shooting 55% and scoring 41 points, which is the most UNT has given up in a first half since Feb. 24, 2024. Wednesday night was the first instance this season in which the Owls lost after leading at the break.
"We give a lot of credit to Temple, they came out with a heck of a game plan," head coach Jason Burton said. "They were co-champions last season for a reason, and they showed their toughness on the day, but a huge testament to our players and how we played today."
Tommisha Lampkin recorded her 10th double-double of the season and 27th of her career. The fifth-year senior scored 16 points and recorded 10 rebounds on the night.
Kyla Deck matched Lampkin in points with 16 and went a perfect 7-7 from the field. Twelve of Deck's points came in the second half during UNT's comeback.
North Texas took the lead on an Ereauna Hardaway layup with 2:13 remaining in the game to give the Mean Green a 70-69 lead. From that point, the Mean Green retained the advantage, forcing a missed 3-point attempt from Tiarra East at the buzzer to secure the win. Temple's second-leading scorer on the season averaging 16.5 points per game entering Wednesday's contest, East was held to two points, tying her lowest total since March 2, 2022 during her freshman season.
With the victory, UNT took claim to the best start to conference play in program history at 8-1. The Mean Green also now share the lead in The American following UTSA's loss to South Florida on Wednesday night in Tampa.
Next up, the Mean Green head to Tampa on Saturday, Feb. 1 to face the Bulls with tip-off set for 6 p.m. CT. The contest will be streamed on ESPN+ and will be broadcasted on the Varsity Network App.
