Aysia Proctor’s free throws in the final seconds push Mean Green over Mustangs
DALLAS – The UNT women's basketball team bounced back in a big way, defeating SMU on the road in a hard-fought 58-55 victory Saturday night in Moody Coliseum.
The Mean Green and Mustangs battled for the full 40 minutes with the largest lead of the game being UNT's 43-36 lead in the third quarter. North Texas built that lead behind an 8-0 run in the quarter, but it was quickly erased as SMU responded with a 7-0 run of its own to tie the game heading into the fourth quarter.
UNT took the lead from there coming up with clutch stops and free throws down the stretch. North Texas held SMU to 1-of-9 from the field to close the game and relied on Aysia Proctor to knock down four free throws to ice the game and improve to 4-1 on the season.
"We practice free throws every single day, so I was confident going to the line knowing I was going to knock them down," Proctor said.
The junior guard from Schertz led North Texas at 16 points with 12 coming in the second half. Megan Nestor recorded her third double double of the season with 11 points and 15 rebounds, while Jazzy Owens-Barnett posted 10 points in her return to the floor after missing Wednesday's game against ACU.
The Mean Green were able to get past SMU without hitting a 3-pointer for the first time since Feb. 16, 2023. After averaging 19 3-point attempts per game leading up to Saturday, North Texas only shot four on the night, but were able to collect 30 points in the paint and 20 at the charity stripe.
North Texas will head to the Hoopfest Women's Basketball Challenge in Frisco next week for a pair of games against Saint Mary's and Texas Tech.
