DENTON, Texas – UNT women's basketball fell to No. 24 Oklahoma State 73-55 inside The Super Pit Wednesday night.
North Texas (5-3) was able to hold a potent Cowgirls offense that came into the night with the nation's third highest scoring offense of 94.9 points per game to 73, their second-lowest total of the season. The Mean Green also forced Oklahoma State into 15 turnovers to just eight of their own.
"What we're doing right now that we can hang our hat on and be proud is that we're guarding at a high level," head coach Jason Burton said. "We're talking about (Oklahoma State) that averaged 95 points per game that we held to 73 tonight. There are not too many teams that are doing that right now."
However, the Cowgirls won the battle inside, outscoring the Mean Green 44 to 30 in the paint and collecting 13 more rebounds. Achol Aykot led the way with a 10-point, 14-rebound double double with 11 board coming in the first half. Haleigh Timmer led all scorers with 23 points followed by Jadyn Wooten's 15.
After trailing 39-23 at the half, UNT scored the first six points of the third quarter to cut OSU's lead to 10. Andi Schissler had eight points in the quarter and finished with a team-high 12 on the night.
Oklahoma State responded with an 11-2 run and never let the Mean Green get within 10 again as it improved to 9-1 on the season.
North Texas will look to end a two-game skid Saturday against Texas Southern.
