PHILADELPHIA — The UNT men's basketball team lost 66-61 at Temple Sunday afternoon to close out the regular season. The loss snaps what was a season-best seven game winning streak.
The Mean Green (23-7, 14-4) finish second in the American Athletic Conference standings with a 14-4 league record, their third-most single season league wins in program history. They earned the conference tournament's No. 2 seed and will start the 13-team tournament on Friday in the quarterfinal round at 6 p.m. CT from Dickies Arena in Fort Worth.
Sunday North Texas was led in scoring by Atin Wright who scored all 18 of his points in the second half. He made just one 3-pointer on Sunday as the Owls (17-14, 9-9) held North Texas to a season low two 3s.
"Ultimately we dug ourselves too big of a hole," said head coach Ross Hodge of his team. UNT trailed by as many as 15 points Sunday. "Got to give (Temple) coach Adam Fisher and his staff and team a lot of credit. They played with more purpose. But I love the fight from our team. A lot lesser of teams would have given up and we fought and scrapped and gave ourselves a chance but just ultimately dug ourselves too big of a hole."
North Texas' 23 regular season wins this year are tied for the second-most regular season wins in program history.
Friday's AAC Tournament quarterfinal game will be broadcast on the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield and on ESPNU. They will play the winner of the seven seed versus 10 seed.
