White becomes the sixth head coach in UNT Softball history
DENTON, Texas – UNT Vice President and Director of Athletics Jared Mosley announced the hiring of Cody White as the sixth head softball coach in program history on Thursday. Prior to joining the Mean Green, White led the University of Central Oklahoma to 10 NCAA Division II tournament appearances over 12 years.
"I'm excited to welcome Coach Cody White, his wife Hillary, and their children Lillie, Brooks, and Miles to UNT," Mosley said. "In our search for the next head coach of UNT Softball, we were looking for a culture builder, a strong advocate for our student-athletes, and a proven winner. I believe we've found all of that in Coach White. I look forward to working with him to elevate our program in the American Conference and on the national stage."
White is the winningest coach in UCO history, boasting a 498-171 record. Among active NCAA head coaches with 12 or fewer years of experience, White leads all divisions with 498 career victories, ahead of notable names like Dot Richardson (Liberty, 432 wins) and Kenny Gajewski (Oklahoma State, 400 wins).
"I'm incredibly grateful and excited for the opportunity to lead the Mean Green Softball program," White said. "UNT has a strong foundation and a clear vision for sustained excellence, and I'm eager to get started. I look forward to working with our student-athletes, staff and administration to build a championship-caliber culture. My family and I are thrilled to join the Mean Green community, and we're ready to get to work."
In 2025, White led the Bronchos to its second NCAA Division II Women's College World Series appearance in three years, posting the second-best win total in program history with 52 victories. His teams have earned five consecutive invitations to the NCAA Tournament and compiled 25 national tournament wins over his 12 seasons at the helm.
Over his tenure at Central Oklahoma, White won four MIAA Coach of the Year awards (2017, 2019, 2023, 2025) and added NFCA Division II Central Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors in 2023 and 2025. He coached 23 All-Americans and 62 All-Region honorees, including three Division II Collegiate Commissioners Association (D2CCA) Central Region Player of the Year winners.
A native of Edmond, Okla., White developed 77 all-conference performers, including 34 first-team selections, with seven MIAA player or pitcher of the year award winners. Most recently, P/UT Terin Ritz was named 2025 MIAA Player of the Year while OF Rylee Lemos garnered the league's Defensive Player of the Year award.
White, who holds a .744 career winning percentage, tallied 232 conference victories and won nine MIAA championships, including four conference tournament titles during his time in Edmond. In 2023, UCO posted a school-record 54 wins and made its first World Series appearance since 2013, finishing ranked fourth in the nation.
Before he took the head job at UCO, White served as the program's first full-time assistant coach as the Bronchos won their first Division II national championship in 2013. The coaching staff earned the 2013 NFCA Division II National and Regional Coaching Staff of the Year award.
White began his coaching career in 2008 at Edmond Memorial High School as an assistant softball, baseball, basketball and volleyball coach. In 2010, he helped the Bulldogs' baseball team reach the state tournament. White also spent one season as head baseball coach for the Edmond Stars, an American Legion club based in his hometown.
He played college baseball at North Central Texas College in 2005 before transferring to Southern Nazarene University where he played from 2006-08. At Southern Nazarene, White was named NAIA First Team All-Region and First Team All-Sooner Athletic Conference as a junior and received SAC Gold Glove honors as a senior in 2008.
White graduated from Southern Nazarene with a bachelor's degree in social studies education. He and his wife, Hillary, have three children: Lillie, Brooks and Miles.
UNT retained Elevate to conduct an extensive national search for head coach candidates. White's hire is contingent upon completion of the university background check process.
