WEST POINT, N.Y. – The UNT soccer team dropped a 3-1 match to Army on Thursday night in the program's first-ever trip to New York.
The Mean Green (4-5-0) opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a goal from Emma King, who was making her first start of the season after making her season debut last week against Abilene Christian. They held the 1-0 lead until the waning minutes of the first half when Army tied the match in the 41st minute.
UNT entered the night ranked ninth nationally in shots per game (20.3) and was allowing opponents just 7.5 shots per game but was outshot by Army (5-2-1) by a final tally of 21-12.
Junior goalkeeper Alina Arneth made several big saves, finishing the night with five to tie her season high, but allowed two goals in the final 10 minutes for the deciding margin.
UNT has been playing without several key pieces in recent games, including sophomore defender Ella Bushko, who has missed the last five matches, and then junior defender Lily Cunningham, who had started all but one match this year and played all 90 minutes in five, missed Thursday with an injury.
"Give credit to Army. That's a heck of a team and, of course, and extremely fit one," said head coach John Hedlund. "We fought until the very end, had the game tied with a little over 10 minutes to play and, unfortunately, we ran out of gas. This has not been an easy non-conference schedule, and Army might be the best team we played so far, which is saying a lot. No excuses, but the injuries have really hurt our depth, especially in games like these, but we will keep battling, never quit and hopefully we start to get a few more players back from injury."
The Mean Green will stay on the east coast for their next match, which will come at noon Saturday at NJIT in Newark, New Jersey, before they return to the Lone Star State to open American play at UTSA next Thursday, Sept. 18.
