DENTON – Mean Green softball and head coach Cody White made its first transfer addition to the 2026-27 roster with the signing of right-handed pitcher Riley Mays from Grayson College on Friday.
"We are thrilled to welcome Riley to the Mean Green family," White said. "Her competitive nature in the circle and positive attitude will be tremendous assets as we continue building a winning culture at UNT."
Mays will play the spring 2026 season as a sophomore at Grayson College before she arrives in Denton ahead of the fall semester. In her first collegiate season, Mays was named Second Team All-Conference in the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) and helped the Vikings advance to the 2025 NJCAA Division I Softball World Series.
She finished the season with a 13-0 record over 124 innings pitched and a team-high mark of 48 appearances, including five starts. Mays ranked fourth in the NTJCAC with 136 strikeouts while she recorded a 1.64 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in the circle. In addition to her impressive on-field performance, she earned 2025 NJCAA All-Academic Second Team honors and was named an NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete.
A native of Ardmore, Okla., she was a four-year letter winner at Dickson High School, playing both fast and slow-pitch softball. As a senior, she was named a Middle West All-State selection by the Oklahoma High School Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association (OFSCA). She was also an All-Region honoree twice and a three-time All-District selection with the Comets.
UNT softball begins the 2026 season on Feb. 6 against national runners-up Texas Tech at the Twisted Vines Bayou Bash in Lake Charles, La. The Mean Green defeated the then-No. 13 Red Raiders, 6-5, on a walk-off grand slam from returning senior Riley McNemar in its lone meeting last season.
