STARKVILLE, Miss. – UNT softball lost 10-2 in five innings to No. 19 Mississippi State at Nusz Park on Sunday to close The Snowman: Alex Wilcox Memorial tournament.
"We learned a lot as a team this weekend," head coach Cody White said. "A large part of our roster is new, so our focus right now is learning to take the next step. There's no doubt that we've got to improve and compete harder, but I did see some fight. We're starting to get the energy that I'm looking for, and that will translate into wins soon."
The Mean Green (2-8) faced the Bulldogs' (10-0) top pitcher, Peja Goold (W, 5-0), but UNT freshman Kaycee Slovak posted the first earned runs of the season on the star transfer with a two-run home run in the fifth inning.
Senior Riley McNemar scored on the home run after she led off the inning with a single to break up a potential no-hitter.
North Texas opens its home schedule at 6 p.m. Wednesday against East Texas A&M on ESPN+ from Lovelace Stadium. Fans can purchase tickets HERE.
