LAREDO, Texas – The UNT men's golf team is tied for third and just four strokes back of the lead after the first two rounds of the Border Olympics on Monday.
Fresh off its best tournament finish of the season, North Texas once again finds itself in contention for the team title. The Mean Green were firing on all cylinders early, combining for a 3-under first round that briefly put it atop the leaderboard. That 281 was tied for UNT's lowest 18-hole score since the third round of the season opener back in September.
Freshman Mitchell Maier is squarely in the hunt for the first individual championship of his short career. A 4-under first round highlighted Maier's day as he sank 10 of UNT's field-best 32 birdies and finished a single shot behind the lead in solo second. In just his sixth collegiate tournament, Maier is looking to become UNT's first individual champion since the 2020-21 season.
The rest of the Mean Green lineup concluded play in similar territory with Blake Keen (T21, +2), Alex Huang (T25, +3), Noah Blaickner (T34, +4) and Rayhan Latief (T42, +5) all within three strokes of each other. It proved to be a relatively smooth day for the group as nobody shot higher than 75 in eight combined rounds.
Competing for the first time this spring was Kalle Svederman, who shot 4-over and is tied for 34th while competing as an individual. After a 77 in the morning, Svederman rebounded by shooting his second sub-70 round of the season and jumping 30 spots on the leaderboard.
Once again playing at Laredo Country Club, Tuesday's final round will begin at 8:00 a.m. CT with a shotgun start and can be followed live here.
