GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNT trio of Sydney Guidara, Amelia Sharp and Kamryn Wong repeated on Wednesday as American Conference Team Diving champions with a score of 298.25 to earn back-to-back championships after winning the event a year ago in Dallas when they set an American Conference record score for the event.
The Mean Green got two strong dives apiece from the three-person team, including a pair of 58.8 scores on the 3-meter springboard from Guidara and Wong to slam the door shut on fellow medalists East Carolina and FIU, as the Mean Green averaged close to 50 points per dive to edge out East Carolina by 12 points.Â
"We knew coming in that defending a title is always harder than winning it the first time," associate head coach/diving coach Stephanie O'Callaghan said. "Returning our entire roster gave us confidence, but with three new teams added to the conference, this was truly anyone's meet. It was tight from start to finish, and we weren't in the lead for most of it — which honestly says a lot about the competitive level tonight. I'm really proud of how our group stayed composed, trusted their training, and kept fighting. To have it come down to the final dive between three teams and execute when it mattered most — that's championship poise. It was a thrilling finish, and I couldn't be more proud of how they handled the pressure. It was a great way to kick start the meet and we're looking forward to the individual events ahead."
In the pool on Wednesday, UNT had two finalists, as Scarlett McCloud finished sixth in the 50 freestyle C-Final in 23.54, and Vivian Anderson finished sixth in the 50 freestyle B-Final in a personal best time of 23.22. The 200 medley relay team of Anderson, Mikaela Goelst, Maria Mitova and McCloud finished eighth in 1:42.16.
Competition will continue on Thursday with the broadcast on ESPN+.
