GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNT junior Sydney Guidara went toe-to-toe with eventual champion Frida Zuniga Guzman, of East Carolina, before eventually falling just short to claim the silver medal in the American Conference Championship 1-meter springboard for the second straight year, and senior Kamryn Wong - last year's champion in the event - finished third to claim the bronze medal on Thursday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Guidara set a new Championship record with 320.55 in the morning preliminary before scoring a 309.25 in the final to win her second silver medal in the event, while Wong rebounded from a rough opening dive to get herself back on the podium with a score of 287.80. Teammate Ashley Van Milligan placed eighth in the Championship final after not competing in the event last year at the conference championship.
"It was an exciting and highly competitive 1-meter contest from start to finish," associate head coach/diving coach Stephanie O'Callaghan said. "Syd and Kam going 1-2Â in prelims gave us great momentum, and Ashley earning her first career A-final was a big moment for our team. Finals stayed tight all the way through, and Frida really stepped it up and earned the win. I'm so proud of how Sydney and Kamryn battled to the end and got on the podium for a 2-3 finish, as well as Ashley, who showed tremendous consistency to hold eighth in a strong field."
In other diving action, sophomore Amelia Sharp moved from 14th to win the B-final, and junior Michaella Rhodes scored points as a C-finalist.
In the pool, the Mean Green notched a C-final win in the 100 butterfly from sophomore Maria Mitova, whose 55.20 put her in the top-10 on the program's all-time list of swimmers in the event. Sophomore Jette Schindler finished second in the 400 IM with a 4:25.97 to move her into the program's all-time top 10 list of 400 IMers. In other action, freshman Maria Jose Sanchez Castro earned her NIC B-cut time in the 100 IM with a 58.55.
Competition will continue on Friday with the broadcast on ESPN+.
