Huang Takes Solo Lead as Men’s Golf Surges into Final Round of Compadres Collegiate

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico – UNT men's golfer Alex Huang fired a 3-under 69 Monday at the Compadres Collegiate to take a four-shot lead into the tournament's final round. North Texas remains in contention for the team title as well, sitting just three strokes behind first-place UTRGV after 36 holes of play.

Huang elevated his game to another level Monday as he took control of the individual leaderboard. A sophomore out of Plano, Huang made quick work of the front nine and entered the turn at 3-under. He then added three more birdies on the back, giving him a tournament-best 11 total for the week.

Huang has four career top-10 finishes but is looking to secure his first championship on Tuesday.

Three other Mean Green players landed inside the top 20 in Noah Blaickner (T10), Mitchell Maier (T17) and Blake Keen (T19).

Blaickner sank three birdies and carded a 75, moving him to 5-over for the week. Another solid round on Tuesday would likely give him his first top 10 finish since joining the UNT program. Meanwhile, Maier's 2-over round was highlighted by an eagle on the seventh hole, the first by a North Texas player this spring. He is 7-over through 36 holes, one stroke ahead of Keen.

Rayhan Latief signed off on a 4-over 76 in 26th-place but takes some momentum into the third round thanks to back-to-back birdies on his final two holes. Joe Stover also continued to gain valuable experience while competing as an individual, shooting an 81 and moving into 42nd.

North Texas has the team title in its sights as it enters the final round at 17-over, just three strokes behind the leading Vaqueros. Once again being played at Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club, Tuesday's action will begin at 7:30 a.m. CT and can be followed live here.
