COMMERCE, Texas – UNT softball split the opening day of the Lion Classic on Friday at the John Cain Family Softball Complex with an 8-3 loss against St. Thomas (MN) before a 4-3 victory over East Texas A&M.
The Mean Green (4-9) matched and broke its season-high mark in hits with eight against St. Thomas (8-4) and 11 in the win over East Texas A&M (5-8) as five players collected multiple hits versus the Lions, including Ariah Mitchell who set her career high with three.
In game one, the Mean Green allowed seven runs in the first two innings before it held the Tommies to only one run on six hits over the final five frames. UNT summoned three late runs with one run in the fourth, fifth and sixth, but stranded a season-high 14 runners on base, the most for the program since Feb. 13, 2021, against Nicholls.
Elizabeth Moffitt recorded her fifth multi-hit game of the season with a pair of singles along with a walk while Mitchell, Riley McNemar and Eva Daniels each finished with one RBI. Freshman Addie Perry tallied her first career hit in her first start of the year while fellow freshman Laila Nobles drew a walk in her first career appearance.
After entering with two on in the second inning, senior Britney Lewinski (ND) steadied the ship as she finished with five strikeouts over five innings pitched while starting pitcher Anneca Anderson (L, 2-2) took the loss against St. Thomas.
In game two, Anderson (W, 3-2) cruised in the early innings as she gave up only two hits in the first five innings while the offense supplied her with run support as Madison Conley opened the scoring in the third with an RBI double before scoring on a double steal play.
UNT opened the sixth with three consecutive singles to load the bases before Daniels dropped a two-run single into shallow right field to provide key insurance runs. The Lions opened its ledger with a two-out RBI single in the home half of the sixth to cut the deficit to 4-1 before a trio of two-out singles in the seventh scored two additional runs.
After a fourth single put runners on first and second with two outs, Lewinski (S, 1) entered the circle and struck out the final batter of the game for her first save of the season and eighth of her career.
