CHARLOTTE – The UNT men's basketball team lost 80-79 at Charlotte Wednesday night.
The Mean Green (16-13, 7-9) got a career performance from sophomore Reece Robinson who finished with 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Robinson was 4-of-4 from deep Wednesday night.
But with 2.4 seconds remaining and North Texas leading 79-78, Buddy Hammer Jr. was called for a loose ball foul after a missed shot to send the 49ers' (15-13, 9-6) Anton Bonke to the line. The 7-foot-2 center sank both his free throws to win it.
"This one hurts, because our guys played so hard," said UNT head coach Daniyal Robinson. "We attacked the rim and played a physical game. They just made a couple more plays than us."
Along with Robinson's 23 points, sophomore Je'Shawn Stevenson and junior David Terrell Jr. each scored in double figures and combined for 34 points.
UNT on Wednesday made 11 3-pointers, which was its most made 3s in a conference game this year.
Next up for the Mean Green is their last road game of the year. They'll travel to UAB on Sunday for an 11 a.m. CT tip.
