LUBBOCK, Texas – UNT softball opened the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic with a 10-2 win in five innings over Abilene Christian before it fell 10-2 in five innings against No. 2 Texas Tech at Rocky Johnson Field on Friday night.
The Mean Green (8-11) extended its winning streak to four games with the victory over the Wildcats (2-15) which marked the longest run-rule winning streak in program history before it fell to the Red Raiders (18-1) in the nightcap.
In game one, Ariah Mitchell collected her first Division I home run and first stolen base at UNT while she matched her season-best mark of three RBI with two hits, both for extra bases. Eva Daniels, Bradi Harman and Blayze McNemar each tallied two hits apiece against ACU, all of which matched or marked season highs.
Starting pitcher Britney Lewinski (W, 4-4) tossed her fourth complete game of the season with five strikeouts over five innings pitched. She leads all pitchers in the American Conference with 52 strikeouts this season.
Elizabeth Moffitt reached base in all four plate appearances against the Wildcats as she registered three walks and an RBI single in the fifth inning. In game two against Texas Tech, she tagged her second RBI single of the day in the first inning to push her streak of consecutive plate appearances reached to seven.
In the fifth and final inning of game one, Madison Conley helped advance the lead with a two-run double which scored both Daniels and Mitchell before Moffitt tallied the ninth run. Needing one run to seal the victory, head coach Cody White called upon freshman Kaycee Slovak as a pinch hitter.
Slovak notched the game-winning double after an eight pitch at-bat which scored pinch runner Rylie Harris. Slovak is the first Mean Green player with a walk-off hit since Taylor Platt versus UTSA on April 6, 2025.
In game two, three UNT players reached base in the first inning including Moffitt's RBI single with one out. The Mean Green are one of two teams that have led Texas Tech in the first inning this season after Fresno State did so at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Feb. 19.
Freshman Laila Nobles hit her first career home run in the fourth inning with a solo shot to left-center field. She became the third player to homer off acclaimed transfer Kaitlyn Terry this season.
Despite the final scoreline, the Mean Green recorded only three strikeouts against the Red Raiders which marks the fewest of any opponent this season.
North Texas meets ACU at 2 p.m. Saturday before a 7 p.m. matchup against Detroit Mercy (2-7) on day two of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic.
