LAFAYETTE, La. – UNT softball lost two games at the 40th Annual Louisiana Classic with a 7-6 defeat to Jax State and 10-5 loss against Louisiana at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park on Saturday.
Despite scoring first in both contests, the Mean Green (0-4) were unable to hold its four-run lead against the Gamecocks (2-1) and two-run advantage versus the Ragin' Cajuns (3-0). Last season, UNT was 22-5 when it scored first in a game.
In game one, Bradi Harman opened the scoring with an RBI single in the second inning after freshmen Eva Daniels and Lianna Hull reached base. Daniels scored on Harman's RBI single before Daniels crossed the plate on a passed ball for an early 2-0 lead.
Elizabeth Moffitt and Madison Conley added to the lead with back-to-back solo home runs to open the third inning. Jax State responded with its first run in the home half of the third before exploding for four two-out runs in the fifth and one in the sixth for a 6-4 advantage.
In the top of the seventh, Moffitt delivered an RBI triple that rattled off the top of the wall before she later tied the game at 6-6 when she scored on a fielder's choice. After a leadoff walk and subsequent sacrifice bunt, the Gamecocks flared an RBI single into right for the walk-off win.
Starting pitcher Britney Lewinski (L, 0-2) recorded a season-high five strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings pitched in the opener.
In game two, North Texas took a two-run lead as Taylor Platt and Conley each recorded RBI singles in the third, but Louisiana struck back with four runs in the home half of the frame. UNT scored one in the fourth inning but were again countered with two runs from the Ragin' Cajuns for a 6-3 lead for the home side.
In the top of the fifth, Moffitt delivered her third home run of the young season with a two-run blast to center field to cut the Mean Green deficit to 6-5. Louisiana put the game out of reach with one run in the fifth and three more in the sixth for the 10-5 victory.
Harman (L, 0-2) made her second start in the circle and atop the Mean Green lineup but was limited to 3 1/3 innings pitched while Kayleigh Smith spun 2 2/3 innings with two strikeouts.
North Texas caps the weekend back at the Twisted Vines Bayou Bash in Lake Charles, La., on Sunday against ULM at 1 p.m.
