UNT opens conference play 6-0 for the first time in program history with sweep of Tulsa
DENTON – Senior Riley McNemar delivered the walk-off RBI single as Mean Green softball completed its second-consecutive American Conference sweep, defeating Tulsa 9-1 in six innings on Sunday at Lovelace Stadium.
"We played really tough the first two games … and then I think this last game, we put that toughness together with a strong performance," head coach Cody White said. "[Today] is the best we've played in a while. We kind of put it all together and it was really good to see … the toughness from our team but also see the talent shine through."
North Texas (16-13, 6-0) matched its season-high mark of 16 hits in the contest and matched the seventh-best total in program history. Additionally, the Mean Green collected its first 6-0 start to league play in program history with the win over the Golden Hurricane (8-18, 0-6), besting the 5-0 mark from the 2024 season.
Anneca Anderson (W, 6-3) recorded her sixth complete game of the season against her former team as she threw six innings with three strikeouts, allowing only one run on four hits and three walks.
Freshman Laila Nobles enjoyed a career day as she finished 3-for-3 with one walk and notched a new career high in hits after a two-hit performance Saturday. Fellow first-year player Eva Daniels impressed with her second three-hit game of the weekend, adding two runs scored.
Despite the run-rule finish, the Mean Green trailed 1-0 after the top of the first inning which marked the third-consecutive comeback win and seventh of the season. Bradi Harman collected the game-tying RBI in the home half of the first on a fly ball to center field that fell feet shy of the infield dirt due to extreme wind conditions. Harman finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.
In the third, UNT took the lead when pinch hitter Kaycee Slovak tallied an RBI single to center before a fielder's choice and subsequent error allowed two additional runs to score for the 4-1 lead.
Harman scratched across the fifth run with an RBI single in the fourth before Rylie Harris registered her first RBI of the season with a single.
Armed with a 6-1 lead heading into the sixth, Nobles and Hull each reached base before Ariah Mitchell drove in two runs, including pinch runner Sienna Mayer, for a seven-run lead. Mitchell later scored on the McNemar walk-off single through the right side.
UNT visits American Conference rivals UTSA for a three-game series beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. with streaming coverage on ESPN+ from Roadrunner Field.
