North Texas moves into sole possession of first place in the American Conference
SAN ANTONIO – Mean Green softball won 6-4 over UTSA at Roadrunner Field on Sunday afternoon to clinch its third-consecutive American Conference series win.
"Winning a road series against a talented team is never easy," head coach Cody White said. "But after a tough loss Friday, the team took ownership of their performance and wrestled the series back."
UNT (18-14, 8-1) moved into sole possession of first place in the American with the two-run victory over the Roadrunners (18-15, 7-2) combined with a road loss by South Florida (25-10, 7-2 American) against Tulsa.
A pair of fourth inning home runs from Taylor Platt and Madison Conley proved to be the difference as Platt tied the game with a solo shot, the first of her career, before Conley tallied a three-run blast to steal the lead at 6-3.
Conley collected her third game with three RBI this season while Platt posted her fifth multi-hit game of the season.
Britney Lewinski (W, 10-7) tossed her ninth complete game of the year, second of the weekend, as she threw seven innings with two strikeouts and allowed four runs on 11 hits and one walk. She tied her season-low mark in walks allowed with one, the fourth time this season in outings of four or more innings.
The Mean Green unconventionally opened the scoring with a chipped infield RBI single from Bradi Harman in the first before Ariah Mitchell recorded her 25th RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly in the second inning.
The Roadrunners negated Harman's RBI single in the bottom of the first and took the lead at 3-2 with two runs in the second. Trailing 6-3 entering the seventh, UTSA threatened with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to two runs with two outs but stranded a pair of runners with a game-ending lineout to Platt in center field.
North Texas returns to Lovelace Stadium for a midweek matchup against Abilene Christian at 6 p.m. Wednesday with streaming coverage on ESPN+. Fans can purchase tickets HERE.
