UNT secured its fifth American Conference series victory of the season
DENTON – UNT softball collected an American Conference series victory over East Carolina with a 4-3 win in game two before it fell 8-2 on the back end of a doubleheader on Saturday at Lovelace Stadium.
"You hate to end [with a loss] … but winning the series against a team like that, we're proud of them," head coach Cody White said. "They're taking steps in the right direction, and the key is to continue to win series. That's going to give us a chance, in the end, to do something special."
The Mean Green (24-19, 13-5) edged out its sixth one-run victory of the season in the first game of the doubleheader before the Pirates (25-20, 9-9) struck back for eight runs in the series finale, tied for its second-highest run total in a conference game this season.
In game one of the doubleheader, Britney Lewinski (W, 12-9) held ECU to two runs over five innings before Anneca Anderson (S, 2) tallied her second save of the season and third of her career as she spun the final two innings. Both Lewinski and Anderson tallied two strikeouts.
East Carolina held a 2-0 lead after two and a half innings before North Texas fought back for three in the third and one in the fourth. Eva Daniels, Madison Conley, Elizabeth Moffitt and Taylor Platt each scored one run as Daniels, Bradi Harman and Riley McNemar tallied RBI.
Freshman Sienna Mayer finished Saturday's opener 2-for-3 as posted her third consecutive two-hit game and fourth overall of the season.
In the series finale, Mayer was promoted to the leadoff spot in the order and was one of two Mean Green bats to collect a hit. She later scored on a two-run home run from Conley in the sixth inning.
Conley reached 14 home runs for the season which marks the seventh-most in program history while she sits at 12 doubles, tied for 10th in single-season history. She currently holds the highest single season on-base (.503) and slugging percentage (.849) marks in program history.
North Texas heads to Abilene Christian for a midweek matchup at Poly Wells Field on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
