Head coach Rodney DeLong announced the hiring of Jason Gwyn as an assistant coach for UNT Softball on September 10, 2021. He enters his fourth season with the Mean Green in 2024-25.
During his third season in Denton, Gwyn led the UNT defense to its second-best mark for double plays turned (28) and its third-best fielding percentage clip (.968) in program history. The Mean Green defense backed up a pitching staff that produced 13 shutouts, the highest number in UNT history en route to its fourth consecutive 30-win season.
In 2023, Gwyn helped the Mean Green reach its third-highest win total and its second conference tournament finals appearance in program history. He directed North Texas to match the highest single-season total of 81 stolen bases, including the first pair of 20-plus steal teammates (Lexi Cobb, Cierra Simon) in UNT history.
Gwyn was added to the USA Softball Women’s National Team coaching pool in March 2023 which made him eligible to be selected as a coach for a U.S. Women’s National Team roster. After the 2023 season, he was invited to coach at the U.S. Women’s Fast Pitch Camp along with numerous all-American selections including a pair of national player of the year winners, Jocelyn Alo (Oklahoma) and Valerie Cagle (Clemson).
In his first season, North Texas had a record-setting year with program highs in numerous team categories along with the second-most wins in program history. The Mean Green earned its first NCAA Regionals appearance after winning the Conference USA Championship tournament title.
Before joining North Texas, he was the head softball coach at Hebron High School in Carrollton, Texas from 2017-21. He also spent the 2016 season as the head coach for Little Elm High School after five seasons as an assistant at Hebron.
In 2008, Gwyn coached three teams in Austria for one season. He led the Austrian National team who placed third out of 12 squads at the European Championships, the Junior National Team who placed seventh and the Superfund Wanderers, a professional team located in Vienna, who finished third in the Euro Cup.
This is his second stint for a college in Denton, as Gwyn previously served as an assistant coach at Texas Woman’s University for the 2005-06 season. He also spent two years as a student assistant at Texas Tech and graduate assistant at Texas.
Gwyn graduated from Texas Tech in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise and Sport Science. He also earned a master’s in sports psychology at the University of Texas in 2005.
