Mike Viramontez
- Title:
- Volunteer Assistant Coach
Mike Viramontez is in his third year as the volunteer assistant coach of the North Texas softball team, he works mainly with the Mean Green defense and serves as the camp coordinator.
Â
After the COVID-19 shutdown ended the 2020 season prematurely, Viramontez was selected as one of four facilitators for the inaugural softball season of Athletes Unlimited. This new league was completely player driven and focused around players having the opportunity to gain or lose individual points throughout the duration of a game as well as team points. Each week the top-four point receivers would be named team captains and they would choose their team from scratch and this process would be done and redone week-in and week-out.
Â
As a facilitator, Viramontez and the other three individuals were on hand in the bubble in Chicago to assist with transportation to and from the facility once the shuttle service ended as well as offer a helping hand to each team captain during the duration of games, if needed and requested. During his time in Chicago Viramontez was able to work with three-time Olympian and 2020 season champion Cat Osterman, two-time ACC Player of the Year and 2018 National Champion with Florida State Jessica Warren and former McNeese State catcher and 2016 NFCA All-American Erika Piancastelli.
Â
Prior to the shutdown of the 2020 season, the North Texas defense had posted a fielding percentage of .957 with 11 players having a fielding percentage of .900 or better (min. 10 chances). North Texas fielders have posted a .958 fielding percentage during his time in Denton after fielding at a .959 clip in route to their first ever Conference Championship during year one in 2019.
Prior to joining DeLong’s staff in Denton, Viramontez spent three years in the same role at Oklahoma State and Marshall and was a member of the Oklahoma State staff that was named NFCA Mid-West Coaching Staff of the Year in 2017.
While at Oklahoma State, he coached the catchers, assisted with the hitters and the infield and was the camp coordinator. The Cowgirls won over 30 games and appeared in an NCAA Regional in both his years with the team.
Prior to OSU, Viramontez was the head coach at Newman University, where he led the Lady Jets to their first Heartland Conference Tournament berth since 2011 and the winningest season in school history.Â
Working primarily with the outfielders, Viramontez coached two All-Heartland Conference selections and one Daktronics South Central Region selection. Viramontez also served as an assistant softball coach at Newman before making the move to the head coaching position.
Prior to NU, Viramontez served one season as an assistant coach for Southern Arkansas University. Viramontez helped SAU to a fifth place finish in the Great American Conference, and four Lady Muleriders were selected All-GAC.
Viramontez has five years of coaching experience in baseball at the high school level. He helped Bishop Carroll High School to the 2012 Kansas 5A state championship and a 23-5 record.
He started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Andale High School in 2008, where he was part of the Indians’ runner-up finish. After three seasons as an assistant, Viramontez served as Andale head coach in 2011 and totaled a .850 winning percentage.
The Wichita, Kansas native played one season of baseball at Dodge City Community College before transferring to Newman. He eventually graduated from Fort Hays State with a bachelor’s degree in general studies with an emphasis in human health promotion.
