DENTON — The North Texas tennis team is back home this weekend for a pair of matches.
UNT will host defending American Athletic Conference champion Tulsa (11-8) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The Hurricanes not only won their conference tournament but they also made a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.
On Sunday at noon, North Texas will host Conference USA foe UTSA (10-10).
The Mean Green (9-7) and the Roadrunners have only met twice in the previous five years. UNT won its most recent meeting against them in 2015, 4-0. This will be the first time in current North Texas tennis player has faced off against a UTSA opponent in a duel match.
"Tulsa has been a powerhouse in our region and are coming off an Elite Eight appearance," said head coach Sujay Lama. "It's a huge challenge but also a a great opportunity for us. These last few matches, we want to use them to build our confidence in our preparation for the conference tournament."
Including these set of weekend matches, the Mean Green have just five matches remaining and just three at home.
Lama expects these matches to prepare his team for a deep run in the conference tournament that will force the winning team to win four matches in four days. A sweep this weekend would give UNT a lot of confidence headed down the home stretch of the season and into the tournament.
The Mean Green have begun to pickup steam lately. UNT is one win shy of surpassing last season's total and seen growth from its entire lineup and consistency from key positions, no more so than senior Maria Kononova.
The program's all-time singles leader has won 10 straight singles matches with no unfinished matches. In doubles, she and classmate Tamuna Kutubidze are a perfect 8-0 on the year and have led the charge in what has been one of the program's most successful doubles seasons under Lama. UNT has a 26-16 overall record in doubles this spring and is 8-3 versus C-USA opponents and undefeated against ranked teams.
Kutubidze is also nearing a program-record as she closes in on moving into second on the programs all-time singles wins list.
