DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team wrapped up its fifth game in 10 days by extending its winning streak in eight in a row with a 67-57 win over UTEP Saturday afternoon at the Super Pit.
With the win, the Mean Green (14-8, 8-1 C-USA) improve to 8-1 in conference, which ties them with the 1988-89 team for best start in UNT history to league play in the modern era.
"We came out with a lot of intensity from the start," said Deng Geu. "This is a great start and feels great but the ultimate goal is a conference championship and that's where our focus is."
North Texas held off a late run by the Miners (12-9, 3-5 C-USA) who had cut UNT's 16-point lead to just five. Junior James Reese knocked down a clutch 3-pointer with 1:53 left in the game and Javion Hamlet secured the win with four consecutive free throws.
The Mean Green were led on Saturday by Zachary Simmons who scored 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting.
UNT went to its big man early.
Simmons led an early charge in the first half. North Texas built a first half lead as large as 11 points. Simmons scored 14 of his 16 in the first half. He finished the game a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line.
UNT as a team was 21-of-23 as the free throw line.
"Free throws have been huge for us lately," Geu said. "And not turning the ball over."
On Saturday UNT had just six turnovers and it was the third straight game the Mean Green had less than 10.
Point guard Javion Hamlet finished with 14 points, 5 assists and once again had zero turnovers. It was his third straight game with no turnovers.
Two late free throws by Thomas Bell put him in double-digits with 10 but Bell had some of the biggest plays on the night. The junior threw down a thunderous dunk in the first half that got the 4,096 fans loud. Then in the second half after going down with an injury, he returned and immediately had a fierce rejection that helped slow down the late UTEP run.
The Mean Green have a week off before they travel to Houston to face Rice at 2 p.m. UNT beat the Owls 79-59 this past Monday in Denton.
UNT's eight-game winning streak is tied for its longest under third-year head coach Grant McCasland.
