CORPUS CHRISTI – The North Texas softball team got back in the win column with a pair of victories on day one of the Islander Invitational hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Mean Green (10-2) took victories over the host Islanders (3-8) and the Texas Southern Lady Tigers (3-8).
"We're still working through some things at the plate," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "The kids are working, and we'll get to where we want to be eventually."
North Texas was only able to muster 11 runs in the two games on the day, taking game one by a score of 3-0 on eight innings and game two by a score of 8-1. Despite the struggles on offense, the pitching staff picked up the pace only allowing one unearned run on six hits and finished the day with a season ERA of 0.91 while only allowing 11 earned runs through 12 games and striking out 103 hitters. Opponents are hitting a mere .161 against Mean Green arms.
"Pitchers were great today," DeLong added. "Bailey got ahead and commanded the strike zone on almost every hitter, it was good to see her throw well. Then Ariel came in and threw well too while really commanding her pitches."
North Texas will be back in action on Sunday with another game against each team. The Mean Green will take on Texas Southern at 10:30 a.m. before taking on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 1 p.m.
Game One – North Texas 3, TAMU-CC 0
North Texas started off the Islander Invitational with a 3-0 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi behind a record-breaking performance from Hope Trautwein in the circle.
"Hope was solid," DeLong said. "She really commanded her fastball and took advantage of the zone we were dealing with. She threw hard and had a really good performance."
Trautwein set the single game program and Conference USA records with 21 strikeouts. The junior posted a complete stat line that will be tough to touch for any North Texas hurler. She went 8.0 innings allowing one hit, two walks, no runs all while accounting for the absurd number of strikeouts.
The North Texas bats struggled to get going on Saturday morning only accounting for four hits and no runs through the first six innings of play, however behind Trautwein, the Mean Green and Islanders would need more than the scheduled seven innings to decide a winner.
The Mean Green offense finally got rolling in the extra frame after they started the inning with a runner at second and nobody away. This was based on the international tie-breaker rule decided on by tournament officials.
"We had a hard time with the wide strike zone we had today," DeLong added. "But we got gritty at the end and found a way to win the game."
With Nicole Ochotnicki on second, Camille Grahmann led the inning off with a sacrifice bunt to move her to third before Katie Clark singled up the middle to drive in the first run of the game, advancing to second base on the throw. A Tayla Evans single would drive in Clark before Saleen Donohoe drove in Evans with a single of her own two batters later.
Trautwein closed out the game by striking out the side for the fifth time in the game. During the performance Trautwein broke the single game school record for strikeouts while also breaking the Conference USA single game record. This was North Texas' third extra-inning game in the last week and they moved to a 2-1 record in those affairs.
Game Two – North Texas 8, Texas Southern 1
With Bailey Tindell in the circle, the Mean Green offense came out in the first with a four spot to start the scoring. After Hanna Rebar reached on a single to score Tarah Hilton, the Mean Green pulled off a double steal to plate Tayla Evans and move Rebar to second.
Saleen Donohoe then connected on her first career home run to put the Mean Green up four after the first inning.
Tindell would take advantage of the four-run lead and hold the Lady Tiger hitters to just one unearned run on five hits over 5.0 innings in the circle. The sophomore also fanned a career-high five batters in route to her fourth victory of the season.
The Mean Green added a run in the fourth before striking for three more in the sixth. After a Kenzie Young walk, Meagan Youngman would draw a walk before Clark came back in to run. Both runners would advance on a passed ball before a walk to Hilton would load the bases for Gregory with one away. A single to left would plate two for the Mean Green before a fielder's choice two batters later would plate Hilton.
Ariel Thompson, who came on in relief in the sixth inning would come out during the seventh and make quick work of a duo of pinch hitters to preserve win number ten on the season for the Mean Green.
