Softball is On the Road Again ... Finally

After nearly a year removed, North Texas softball is back and ready to start the 2021 campaign. The Mean Green open the season on the road as they take part in the Lion Classic. Matchups with Nicholls State (2), Southeastern Louisiana and South Dakota await the Mean Green 511 miles southeast of Lovelace Stadium.

Due to rain in the Hammond area during the past week, tournament games have been moved from North Oak Park on Southeasterns' campus to St. Thomas Aquinas high school. There will be no live stream but live stats will be available for all four contests.

The Mean Green will be facing off with both Southeastern Louisiana and South Dakota for the first time in program history while the meetings with Nicholls State will come with North Texas holding a 2-0 all-time series advantage.

North Texas enters year three under head coach Rodney DeLong. The Mean Green skipper enters the 2021 campaign with a 199-104-1 career record and a 54-24 mark in Denton. Under DeLong, North Texas has set multiple program bests including wins (35 in 2019), batting average (.285 in 2020), on-base percentage (.385 in 2019) and runs scored (279 in 2019).

Senior ace Hope Trautwein returns for her fourth year with the Mean Green with a trio of career records in hand and more within her reach. Her career ERA of 2.21, opponent batting average of .204 and saves count of eight are all bests in North Texas history while her 48 wins and 458 strikeouts are both second-best in program history. Junior Bailey Tindell enters the season holding the career record in Walks/7 IP and sitting third with an ERA of 2.94.

Senior Tarah Hilton and junior Tayla Evans return to lead the Mean Green offense that lost five everyday players from a year ago due to graduation. Hilton enters the season after her first year in Denton where she hit .318 with two doubles, a triple, four home runs and 13 runs driven in. Evans, a preseason All-Conference USA selection enters her third year on the squad after hitting .314 with five doubles, a triple, five home runs and a team-high 19 RBI in 2020.
