ARLINGTON – GiGi Wall surrendered just three hits and struck out five in a complete-game shutout as North Texas downed Texas A&M – Corpus Christi 5-0 to open play at the Boerner Invitational at UT Arlington and move their win streak to six-straight games.
The Mean Green (9-3) will continue play in Arlington tomorrow with a matchup with #23 Iowa State (13-2), first pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
"GiGi just dominated the game on her end from start to finish," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "She's throwing really well and it was a performance I think we needed coming into tonight against an offense that's scored against a lot of people. She really controlled the game the entire time."
North Texas' offense struck for three runs in the second inning to open up the scoring after Wall set the Islanders (6-5) down in order in the first. After Kalei Christensen was hit by a pitch and Maia Wark drew a walk, Candain Callahan laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and third with one away. Wark's walk improved her on-base streak to seven-straight games and a single in the third would move her hitting-streak to seven game, a team-high.
"Maia's playing good defense and getting timely hits, it's good to see," DeLong added. "That's a kid that didn't start the year in the starting lineup, but has continued to work hard and got an opportunity and has ran with it."
An RBI single from Mikayla Smith and an obstruction call plated a pair for the Mean Green before a single from Tuesday DerMargosian plated Smith to put the lead at 3-0. A one-out single for TAMU-CC in the bottom of the inning would be quickly erased by a caught stealing from Christensen before Wall would retire the next 9 of 11 batters she faced heading into the seventh.
A pair of errors and an RBI double from Smith in the fifth would grow the lead to 5-0 and be all Wall needed to complete the shutout. The graduate would end the game by retiring the side in order in the seventh to lock up her second shutout performance in her last three starts and her third consecutive win in the circle.
