ARLINGTON – North Texas' six-game win streak was snapped on Friday night as they fell to #23 Iowa State 7-1 in the Boerner Invitational at UT Arlington. The Mean Green (9-4) will continue play in Arlington with a pair of games on Saturday. North Texas will take on Missouri State at 9 a.m. before taking on Wichita State at 2 p.m.
Â
"Iowa States' first three hitters are really good and we knew that," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "We didn't have a good first inning and momentum is a big thing for us. We didn't control the zone well and they made us pay. That's a really good team over there and it's good for us, we have to play a team like that and it will definitely make us better."
Â
The Cyclones (14-3) struck early in the matchup, scoring three runs in the first inning after a pair of bloop singles with two away. Iowa State was able to chase North Texas starter Hope Trautwein after just three innings in which she surrendered four runs on five hits and striking out four.
Â
Iowa State would add a run in the second after a leadoff walk was driven in by a double. Trautwein would settle down in the third to set the Cyclones down without any further damage but that would be the end of her outing. Janie Worthington took over in relief and held the Cyclones to a pair of singles and a walk in the fourth and fifth inning to keep the game within reach.
Â
Maia Wark would lead off the fifth for the Mean Green with a single to center which extended her hitting-streak and on-base streak to eight games in a row. A two-out single from Tuesday DerMargosian would score Wark to get the Mean Green on the board but, the Mean Green would get caught in a double-steal to end the frame.
Â
The Cyclones would put a cap on the game with a three-straight two-out hits which concluded in a three-run home run to make the score 7-1 and decrease the chances of a late-inning comeback for the Mean Green.
Â
With the loss, the Mean Green fall to 1-1 on the weekend and 0-3 against ranked opponents in the 2021 season, North Texas also falls to 0-3 against Iowa State all-time at a neutral site.
