UNT Men Hoping to Climb Leaderboard In Round 2

LA QUINTA, Calif. - After the dust settled - literally - in Monday's opening round of The Prestige at the Greg Norman Course at PGA West, the UNT men's golf team ended up in the thick of the pack despite battling brutal wind conditions in the afternoon flight of tee times in the 24-team field loaded with some of the nation's best teams.
The Mean Green are tied for 16th at 16-over par after the opening round but are just a handful of shots of being in the top half of the pack and are sitting ahead of teams like defending national champion No. 5 Pepperdine, No. 9 Stanford, No. 29 Northwestern and No. 49 UCLA.
UNT was led by sophomore Vicente Marzilio, who shot a 1-over 72 on the 7,100-yard course. Marzilio is tied for second in the field in total birdies with five. Sophomore Tucker Allen is tied for 32nd at 3-over after his 74.
"I'm so impressed with how the guys played today," UNT head coach Brad Stracke said. "It was a bad draw with the wind today. Our first tee shot of the day, it was blowing 5 mph, and by the time Lenny (Bergsson) got to his ball, it was blowing 30 mph. Six teams played in the teeth of the wind for 18 holes. Hopefully, tomorrow it will be calm in the morning and blow 30 mph in the afternoon like it did today."
UNT will be paired with Loyola Marymount and Denver for Tuesday's second round and will tee off from the first hole in 11-minute increments starting with Bergsson at 9:40 a.m. Fans can follow the tournament live on Golfstat.
