Men's Golf Battles Brutal Wind In California
2/22/2022 10:13:00 PM | Men's Golf
LA QUINTA, Calif. - For a second consecutive day, the UNT men's golf team drew the short straw in terms of having to face brutal wind conditions at The Prestige at the PGA West Greg Norman Course.
The Mean Green struggled with an unprecedented day of wind in UNT head coach Brad Stracke's career, as did every other team that went out in the morning wave of tee times, as they shot a 27-over-par 311 and enter Wednesday's final round in 21st place but ahead of No. 49 UCLA and just two shots off No. 9 Stanford in a pack of teams.
"The team fought through some of the most difficult conditions I have seen as a coach," UNT head coach Brad Stracke said. "We had gusts of 40 mph and more during our round. The afternoon wave suspended their round because of wind from 3-4:45 p.m.
"We're ready to compete tomorrow and make a move up the leaderboard."
After the afternoon wave of teams saw their round suspended for nearly two hours, they were unable to finish the round before dark and will resume Wednesday.
UNT was led by sophomores Vicente Marzilio and Tucker Allen, who each shot 5-over 76 on a day when players had to consider themselves fortunate to get close to par. Marzilio is tied for 21st at 6-over par, while Allen is tied for 33rd at 8-over.
Sophomore Nikhil Gopal is competing a few miles down the road from the team in The Prestige Individual Invitational and is tied for 20th (out of 62 golfers) at 6-over par after consecutive 3-over 75s, as Pepperdine's Ian Maspat leads the field as the only golfer under par at 2-under.
"Nikhil finished strong with a 3-over during the suspension of our tournament ust a couple of miles down the road," Stracke said.
