Savage, Softball shutout Southern Miss 2-0

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Freshman right-hander Skylar Savage pitched a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts as UNT Softball knocked off Southern Miss 2-0 Friday at the USM Softball Complex.Â

Savage (W, 4-1) recorded her second complete game of the season in the shutout effort. She set a new career high with eight strikeouts. The freshman allowed only two hits and two walks.

Ashlyn Walker started a seventh-inning rally for the Mean Green (12-4, 1-0 CUSA) with a one-out single. Pinch runner Emma Grahmann then stole second and after a single by Sidney Ingle there were runners at the corners with one away.

Cierra Simon came up with a clutch RBI groundout to plate the game's first run and two batters later Ingle sprinted home on a wild pitch for the 2-0 advantage.

UNT's first chance to score came in the sixth when Simon and Lexi Cobb strung together consecutive singles and both advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch, all with no outs. After a ground out, Tayla Evans walked to load the bases but a strikeout and flyout ended the threat.

Mikayla Smith added a base hit for UNT in the win.

Southern Miss got one hit each from Maria Smith and Terrica Williams. Morgan Leinstock (10-2) took the loss with two runs allowed in seven innings. She struck out six and allowed five hits with two walks.
