HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Junior left-hander Ashley Peters led North Texas to a 7-1 series-clinching victory over Southern Miss Saturday at the USM Softball Complex. The Mean Green never trailed and won their first conference series of the season.
QUOTING HEAD COACH RODNEY DELONG
"Ashley (Peters) was really solid and pitched her way out of a couple early jams. The team stayed patient and scored late in the game to really support her too. It's good to win the series on the road and now we want to go out and finish the weekend with a sweep tomorrow."
RECAP
Peters (W, 7-2) recorded her third complete game of the season and clinched the series with Saturday's win. She also set a career-high in strikeouts with eight on the afternoon.
Lexi Cobb started the game with a lead-off single before advancing on a stolen base and passed ball. Tayla Evans recorded an RBI and brought her home on a groundout, to give the Mean Green a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning.
Southern Miss (17-7) responded with its first two batters reaching base and advancing to scoring positions with no outs. Peters then struck out the next batter before the Golden Eagles tied the game on a wild pitch. UNT (13-4) limited the damage and picked up a double play to end the first inning.
The next three innings both teams went scoreless with a back-and-forth pitching battle. North Texas broke the stalemate by scoring three unearned runs in the fifth inning after two errors by Southern Miss. Evans picked up two RBI in the inning on a single to left field.
The Mean Green scored another two runs in the sixth inning when Cierra Simon hit a two RBI single to bring home Mikayla Smith and Molly Rainey to make it 6-1.
The final run came in the top of the seventh when Kailey Gamble hit a sac fly to right field to plate Kalei Christensen and extend the lead to 7-1.
Cobb finished 2-for-4 on the afternoon with two runs while Evans ended 2-for-4 as well and added three RBI.
Destini Brown doubled and scored the lone run for Southern Miss. Jana Lee (5-4) pitched a complete game and took the loss. She finished with six strikeouts, six hits, and seven runs.
