NASSAU, Bahamas - The UNT men's golf team set a pair of program records en route to a second-place finish at the White Sands Bahamas Invitational on Sunday as the Mean Green wrapped up their fall schedule with some positive momentum heading into the spring.
Junior Key Coker, playing in his first event for UNT, and senior Tucker Allen tied for fourth at 11-under par after they each shot 6-under 66s on Sunday, as UNT finished second at 41-under par after a 20-under 268 on Sunday led to a 54-hole total of 823. The 268 and 823 figures are both program lows since at least the 1993-94 season.
Senior Diego Prone shot a 3-under 69 on Sunday to finish tied for 11th at 9-under, and senior Cody Winkler tied for 18th at 5-under. Sophomore Alvaro Roldos carded a 5-under 67 on Sunday to help the team to its 20-under day.
"Playing at the Ocean Club and staying at Atlantis was a truly awesome experience," head coach Luke Calcatera said. "The tournament brought our guys closer together and is a memory we will have forever. All five guys helped the team, and to shoot 41-under just shows what we're capable of. I'm proud of Key Coker stepping up and having a great first tournament for the Mean Green. We put together a solid final round and are going to work hard this offseason to be ready to go and reach new heights this spring."
UNT finished four shots back of Santa Clara and two shots up on third-place St. Mary's.
The Mean Green will now take nearly four months off before kicking off the spring slate in Laredo, Texas, at The Border Olympics on Feb. 19-20.
